There’s nothing more exciting than watching great dogs work a field. Hard running, nose in the air, the cool morning breeze. The scent of feathers, intensity, narrowing the gap, and in the blink of an eye a flash becomes a statue…Staunch, solid, and a high tail completes a stylish point…”WHOA!”…Walking in, scanning the grass, a quick glance at his eyes pin point the spot…Kick-Kick, and the bird explodes from cover! Gunfire, a well placed shot and the bird falls to the earth…”FETCH!”…He’s got it and on the way back. He puts it in my hand and in the vest it goes. A pat on the head and a “GOOD BOY! Now let’s go find another.” Welcome to a day in the field working great dogs…. We train because we love working with dogs. To see a puppy’s first point, first retrieve, and a stylish honor is magical each and every time. We inspire natural drive and hone instinctive skills. While no two pups are the same and each will learn at their own pace, each and every one deserves to be developed to their fullest potential. But, many people’s lives are very busy with family and work, and to properly train it takes time, patience, and specialized knowledge. In addition, you must have the equipment, facilities, fields, and birds to create a successful training environment. That’s where we come in…
We use the cross-training of multiple techniques to teach each skill. This way pup has multiple opportunities to learn, and the training doesn't get boring for him. Our cross-training program helps reduce pup anticipating the training regimen, and has been extreamly successful. We are able to drill for one skill using 4 or 5 different learning methods, and each method only reinforces the others, making each skill - or conditioned response that much more easily learned. Another advantage of cross-training is that less pressure is needed, so you end up with a happy, bold, stylish dog in the end.
Training Fundamentals:

Pups come to us at various levels of development. We work with dogs of all ages, as far as puppies go we start formal training at 3 to 4 months of age, and are shooting wild birds over them by 6 months old. Prior to formal training we do help you get started at home with puppy "play training" techniques, do's and don'ts, and always make ourselves available to clients with questions. The training is done on a per week basis, and most pups are with us for approximately 6 to 12 weeks (some more some less). We communicate with clients frequently via phone and email updating them on pup’s progress (lots of pictures). If you live close and want to pick up your pup for the weekend, (this creates an opportunity to have you engaged in each stage of training) that’s great too! Meeting people and training dogs is what we look forward to every day. Many of our friends are folks we met through our training program and guide service. We are located in central Iowa about an hour east of DesMoines, IA (the heart of pheasant country). Please give us a call or email to talk about how we can help make your pup a great dog in the field, and around the home.
Pre-season Tune Ups are very popular with our clients. It's the perfect time to get your pup some regular field work, get him over lots of birds, get in shape, and be in tip top form for opening day. Please contact us as early as possible to reserve your pup a kennel, as this is our busiest time of the year!
We look forward to meeting you and your pup! Trainer: David Kruse 641-521-1800 davidk@pointersupply.com
